English in a quarter of the time!!
Hello Everyone,
I am a private English Teacher in Milano Italy, and I teach English in a quarter of the normal time with "The Callan Method"
The following is a bit about the Method that I use.
English is an International language.
It could be stated that, English is an International language, most people in the world today would like to be able to speak. It might be useful to them for their work, their social life, or for travelling abroad. However, although they would like to be able to speak it, they are often very reluctant to learn it.
The reason for people's reluctance to learn English is that they find it takes too long, costs too much, and requires too much mental energy, which they cannot spare if they are studying other subjects or have to work all day. In addition to this, they often feel they have little or no natural ability for learning a foreign language. The Callan Method Organization, after many years of intensive research and development, has now changed all this by producing a method that reduces studying time to a quarter, and at the same time makes it possible for virtually anyone to learn the language.
One of the main features of The Callan Method is that it recognizes that most people in the world today do not study English for cultural reasons or because they have a passion for learning foreign languages, but basically because it is the language of international communication. Consequently, they wish to learn it as quickly and as painlessly as possible. The Callan Method has simplified the learning process and keeping the lesson moving so that the student does not have time to become bored.
Unlike most other forms of teaching, this Method involves the students in the lesson by allowing them to speak the whole time instead of just listening to the teacher speak most of the time. It does this on the principle that most people prefer talking to listening, and also that the only way to learn to speak a language is to speak it.
Lessons conducted entirely in English.
Although each new word in The Callan Method is translated into the student's own language as it is introduced, the lesson is conducted entirely in English. With most other ways of teaching, despite what is maintained in theory, the teacher nearly always has to resort to speaking in the student's own language to explain what he is trying to put over. This wastes the student's time, as he already knows his own language. The student wants to hear the teacher speaking in English. It also means the teacher does far too much talking. It is the students who should do most of the talking. As already explained, a student cannot learn to speak the language if the teacher does most of the talking.
Speaking helps the student to remember.
Because Callan Method students are forced to speak the whole time, they find it easier to remember what they are taught. It is much easier for a student to remember words he has actually spoken himself many times then to remember those he has only heard the teacher use.
The Method can guarantee an excellent result with virtually every student. It involves little or no homework, and is easy, interesting and pleasant to use. If this were not so, they would be unable to learn in a quarter of the normal time.
The Method is suitable for students of all ages from 7 to 70, for all nationalities, and for all purposes of study. It requires no equipment, or books.
Instead of taking the usual 350 hours or four academic years to get the average student through the Cambridge Preliminary, it takes only 80 hours, which is one academic year, and only 160 hours for the Cambridge First Certificate.
The Direct Method.
There are two principal ways of learning a language: one is by translation and grammar, and the other is by the Direct Method, whereby the student learns to speak and think directly in the foreign language without translating and with little or no grammar being taught. Most schools in the world use the Direct Method in some form or other. It is a method as old as language itself. it is the natural means whereby two people acquire one another's language.
For example, an ancient Greek would take a scroll and say, "a scroll". Next he would put the scroll on the table, and say, "The scroll is on the table", and by deduction, the Egyptian would understand what was meant.
The Callan Method has combined a little translation and a little grammar with the Direct Method and by so doing has made the Direct Method faster, easier and more effective.
